Abstract
Smoking is a serious global public health issue, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income countries, including Vietnam. This study utilizes survey data from 258 tobacco-using patients at Thai Nguyen Central Hospital and employs a multivariate regression model to analyze the relationship between smoking and its economic and financial burden. The results indicate that cigarette consumption, age, marital status, education level, and the frequency of medical visits significantly impact total healthcare costs. Specifically, each additional cigarette smoked increases the economic burden by 2.81%, while an additional year of age raises healthcare expenditures by 0.39%. Married individuals experience a 40.83% reduction in healthcare costs. Individuals with higher education levels incur a 0.47% increase in medical expenses per additional year of schooling. Wealthier patients incur a 52.56% lower healthcare cost burden compared to the poorest group. Furthermore, each outpatient visit and hospital admission raises the financial burden by 14.07% and 43.7%, respectively. The study suggests policies to regulate tobacco consumption, improve public health, and mitigate the economic strain on both the healthcare system and households.
