Abstract
This study examines the impact of financial development on environmental quality in 16 lower-middle-income countries in Asia over the period 2000–2023. The Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) is employed to estimate the proposed models. The empirical results indicate that financial development tends to exacerbate environmental degradation in lower-middle-income countries in Asia. However, technological innovation is found to mitigate this adverse effect, representing a novel finding of the study. These results provide important empirical evidence for lower-middle-income countries in Asia, particularly in formulating policies that promote financial development and technological innovation along with improvements in environmental quality.
