Abstract
This study examines the impact of Human Development, Trade Openness, and Institutional Quality on Environmental Performance in eight ASEAN countries from 2008 to 2022. Using the Driscoll-Kraay estimator, the results reject the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis, and identify a non-linear monotonically decreasing relationship between Human Development and the environment. Decomposition reveals that income growth drives environmental degradation, whereas improved public health benefits the ecosystem. Notably, the results show that general governance quality and its interaction with trade are negatively correlated with environmental performance. This implies that current governance capacity has not yet effectively fulfilled its green screening role during economic integration. Consequently, the study recommends policies for energy transition and reorienting governance tools toward sustainability.
