Abstract
This study investigates the impact of foreign ownership volatility on the stability of 30 Vietnamese commercial banks during the period 2011-2022. The independent variable representing foreign ownership volatility is measured by the standard deviation of foreign ownership in Vietnamese commercial banks. The dependent variable representing bank stability is the Z-score. While the impact of foreign ownership on bank risk has been extensively investigated in prior research, no studies have been conducted to assess the effect of foreign ownership volatility on the risk of Vietnamese commercial banks. By employing the System Generalized Method of Moments (Sys-GMM) approach, the empirical findings reveal that foreign ownership volatility exerts a positive effect on the stability of Vietnamese commercial banks. Based on these results, the study proposes several policy implications, including enhancing the proportion of foreign ownership in Vietnamese banks and establishing appropriate mechanisms and policies to attract high-quality foreign investors with substantial financial capacity.
