IMPACTS OF LENDING ACTIVITIES ON THE PROFITABILITY OF SYSTEMICALLY IMPORTANT COMMERCIAL BANKS IN VIETNAM

Tác giả: Nguyễn Trần Thuần; Số trang: 11

Abstract
This paper examines the relationship between lending activities and the profitability of systemically important banks (SIBs) in Vietnam in the period 2012-2022. This study shows that these SIBs still depend mainly on traditional activities such as deposits and lending. By using feasible generalized least squares (FGLS) estimation method, the results show that while loan size and credit risk (deterioration in loan quality) are positively correlated with the profitability of the SIBs in Vietnam, asset-liability management strategies through expanding lending are negatively correlated with the profitability of these SIBs. The findings provide further empirical evidence on the role of the traditional business model that relies mainly on taking deposits and lending services for the profitability of Vietnamese commercial banks
