Abstract
The Mekong Delta is a large area inhabited by many ethnic groups. The whole region has over 1,310,000 ethnic minorities, the largest of which is Khmer, accounting for more than 87 percent. They are indigenous people who make their living primarily through farming. For many years, Khmer households’ income has been low in comparison to the others in the region. A multivariate regression model is used in the study to clarify the factors influencing the livelihood of Khmer households. The survey results conducted in three Mekong Delta provinces, Soc Trang, Tra Vinh, and Kien Giang, reveals six factors that influence the degree of income diversification of Khmer ethnic households, including vocational training, means of production, loan borrowing, participation in social organizations, transportation and natural disasters.
Key words: Income; livelihood diversification; Khmer ethnic; Mekong Delta.
