Abstract

Recognizing the importance of non-farming labor in the northern border areas of Vietnam, especially minority ethnic workers, this study attempts to fill the significant gaps by experimental research focusing on the determinants of the non-farmer’s choice of off-farm work. The study uses a quantitative model with qualitative dependent variables and concerns about variables that characterize individual workers and how family circumstances affect the probability of non-agricultural job seeking of minority ethnic workers in the Northern border areas. The results of this study could be very meaningful and important for policy makers to implement and develop appropriate policies for job creation, training, and support for non-farmers to increase their working skills and employability to increase their income, contributing to stabilizing family and local economy and maintaining security in border areas.
Keywords: Binary probit model, non-farm labor, Northern border region, ethnic minorities.
