Abstract
The Human Development Index (HDI) is a statistical tool used to measure the achievement of a country or a territory on three dimensions namely life expectancy, education and per capita income indicators. This paper presents an overview of how to calculate and measure the human development index of the Northern Midlands and Mountainous Region in accordance with the available data. Simultaneously, the study focuses on comparing and assessing the contribution of the dimensions of the human development index including indicators on health, education and income. The results indicate that this region has witnessed gradual growth in human development, whereas the contribution of income index and education index to HDI is still lower compared to the national average. Hence, the research provides some recommendations for the Northern Midlands and Mountains region in raising the human development index by improving the number of students attained upper secondary school level and above and living standards for people in the coming years.
