Abstract
Food waste in Vietnam’s last-mile seafood cold supply chain remains a significant challenge due to infrastructure limitations, high operating costs, and consumer preferences for freshness and product appearance. This study examines the factors influencing seafood waste and the potential mediating role of cold chain management effectiveness (CCME). Data were collected through surveys of seafood retailers and distributors in Vietnam, including supermarkets, frozen seafood stores, distributors, and wholesale markets. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was employed to examine the underlying factor structure, followed by partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to evaluate the measurement model and test the hypothesized structural relationships. The findings indicate that packaging (β = 0.296; p < 0.001), customer behavior (β = 0.170; p = 0.003), and operating costs (β = 0.274; p < 0.001) are positively and significantly associated with CCME, whereas retail display practices and inventory management exhibit no statistically significant effects. Furthermore, CCME is negatively associated with food waste (β = −0.415; p < 0.001). These findings provide empirical insights into cold chain management and offer practical implications for improving operational effectiveness and reducing seafood waste in emerging markets such as Vietnam.
