Abstract
Although women’s entrepreneurship plays an important role in regional economic development, women in rural areas continue to face institutional barriers that may hinder the translation of entrepreneurial intentions into actual behavior. This study systematically maps the intellectual structure and major research themes at the intersection of women’s entrepreneurial intention and the rural context, thereby identifying research gaps and directions for future research. Drawing on 216 scientific articles retrieved from the Scopus database after screening in accordance with the PRISMA protocol and excluding sources that did not meet the specified quality criteria, the study employs bibliometric analysis and VOSviewer to map the relevant knowledge domain. The findings reveal a substantial increase in publications after 2020 and identify four major thematic clusters: (1) structural gender inequality; (2) the Theory of Planned Behavior in rural contexts; (3) psychological and educational mechanisms; and (4) women’s empowerment. Notably, the intention–behavior gap emerges as an important theoretical issue, highlighting the need for further research into the conditions and mechanisms through which rural women’s entrepreneurial intentions translate into actual entrepreneurial behavior. The findings provide a foundation for future research and offer implications for designing entrepreneurship support policies that are more responsive to the needs and circumstances of rural women.
