Abstract
With the aim at studying current situation of culture and livelihoods of 202 Xinh Mun minority ethnic group households in Chiềng Sơ commune (Điện Biên Đông district, Điện Biên province), the surveyed result has shown that high rate of illiteracy (57.95%), high rate of poor households and poverty (68.18%), low average income (2.81 million VND or 126 USD per person per year), widening gap between the rich and the poor (7.94 times), narrowing living and cultural space, acompanying with eager expectation from outside support and preconceptions of outsiders have been growing barriers effecting the Xinh Mun community development. Agricultural livelihoods are considered unsustainable and rather simple, unable to satisfy the food demand of the community, and dependent upon outside factors, not only including input materials, science and techonology but also consumption markets. Beside farming activities on mentioned crops, breeding livestocks and being hired labours, Xinh Mun people at Chiềng Sơ commune have no other livelihoods. Famous handicrafts such as wickerwork and weaving have been decreased and gradually disappeared,… Material and cultural life of the Xinh Mun ethnic group is alarmingly in the red line of difficulty level; therefore, it is needed to have an intervention for a positive change.
