INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT AND ECONOMIC SCALE: EVIDENCE FROM PROVINCIAL DATA IN VIETNAM

Tác giả: Nguyễn Danh Khôi; Số trang: 133

Abstract
This study examines the relationship between industrial development and provincial economic scale in Vietnam using panel data for 27 provincial-level units over the period 2009–2024. A fixed-effects model with Driscoll–Kraay standard errors (FE-DKSE) is used as the main specification, supplemented by dynamic FE-DKSE and System GMM models. The results indicate a positive association between industrial development and provincial economic scale (β = 0.0035, p < 0.01). However, the coefficient changes sign in the dynamic models, indicating that the results are not robust to the inclusion of lagged GRDP. Regional analyses show positive coefficients across the Northern, Central, and Southern regions, although their magnitudes differ; evidence of regional differences remains suggestive. Institutional quality, services and tourism, and ecological conditions are also positively associated with provincial economic scale in the main model. These findings reflect conditional associations and do not establish causal relationships.
