Abstract
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a pivotal role in economic growth, innovation, and sustainable development. This paper aims to analyze the global research landscape and trends on innovation and sustainability in SMEs, thereby clarifying the current status and research gaps. Employing a bibliometric approach, the authors utilized VOSviewer software to map and visualize the research network. The dataset comprises 590 peer-reviewed articles indexed in the Scopus database over the period from 2015 to March 2025. The findings reveal a substantial growth in publication output, indicative of the increasing scholarly attention to this domain. China emerges as the leading contributor (61 articles), whereas Vietnam demonstrates modest engagement (11 articles), highlighting a relative research gap. The evolution of research emphasis has shifted from crisis management capabilities toward innovation and digital transformation as pivotal drivers of sustainable development. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the global academic landscape, highlighting the increasingly important role of innovation and digital transformation in enhancing the competitiveness and sustainability of SMEs.
